In this piece based on his speech at ARI Movement’s 10th Annual International Security Conference, Nirj Deva summarizes the successes of Turkey’s modernization and democratization project, identifies the key areas which make Turkey indispensible to Europe, and finally points to Turkey’s shortcomings in promoting its strengths. Mr Deva also emphasizes that European perception of Turkey is shaped more so by class-related issues than socio-cultural and religious factors.
